Millenary History

From Origins to Today

A crossroads of civilizations that left an indelible mark

Ancient Origins

8th c. BC - 5th c. AD

Puglia was colonized by the Greeks in the 8th century BC. Taranto became one of the most important cities of Magna Graecia. The Romans built the Via Appia, connecting Rome to the region. In 216 BC at Cannae, the Roman army suffered its worst defeat against Hannibal.

Frederick II and the Middle Ages

11th - 13th century

Frederick II of Swabia, "Stupor Mundi" (Wonder of the World), inherited Puglia around 1200. His enlightened reign saw the flourishing of arts and the construction of magnificent castles like Castel del Monte. The Normans before him had created the Duchy of Puglia, bringing prosperity.
